The motability scheme: How it works and the benefits

Under the Motability Scheme, people with disabilities can exchange their mobility allowance for an accessible vehicle, to gain more independence and freedom when travelling. The organisation aims to make transportation as simple, comfortable, and safe as possible.

So far, over 620,000 people have benefitted from the scheme, and the charity has provided nearly five million cars, powered wheelchairs, and scooters.

But what is involved in the application process, and is it right for you?

Who can qualify?

You are eligible for the Motability Scheme if you receive one of the following benefits and have at least 12 months left on your allowance:
Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance (HRMC of DLA)
Enhanced Rate Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment (ERMC of PIP)
War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement (WPMS)
Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP)
You’ll need to provide evidence of your eligibility when purchasing a Motability vehicle. This includes:

  • A form of ID
  • Proof of address from the last six months
  • A certificate of entitlement from the Department of Work and Pensions

Don’t worry if you don’t drive, as you can still benefit from this scheme and select two other people to drive on your behalf and be insured on the lease. You can also nominate a family member, friend, or carer to liaise with Motability for you.
What types of vehicles are available?

There is a huge range of over 2000 vehicles to choose from, including wheelchair accessible cars, powered wheelchairs, and scooters. Any of the standard cars available can be updated with the required adaptations to suit your needs.

If you want a car to accommodate your green lifestyle, electric vehicles are also included in this, which emit zero exhaust emissions into the atmosphere. As well as this, EVs can save you up to £1000 on running costs.

Will it cost me any extra?

Motability will receive your allowance directly to cover the lease payments. To avoid any additional costs, choose a car that is either the same as or less than your benefit allowance. If it’s less than the amount, you will keep the difference.

However, if the car is more expensive than your allowance, you’ll likely have to pay an upfront fee.

The lease payment will also include:

  • Vehicle insurance
  • Tax
  • Breakdown cover
  • Servicing and maintenance
  • Vehicle adaptations

You only need to worry about paying for petrol or for charging the vehicle. For extra convenience and saving money in the long-term, you can install a home charging portal for an electric car.

Whether you need a wheelchair accessible car so you can travel comfortably with your family, a vehicle with adaptations so you can drive yourself without having to rely on others, the scheme can help to enhance your transportation experience.
