You will carry out general maintenance. depending upon the size of business you work for, duties can vary, for smaller businesses an added duty may be talking to customers to find the problem and then going on to solving the problem. In larger businesses there would be a customer service person who would liaise with the customer and then forward you the job. Be prepared to do more in smaller businesses.
What is needed
There are many things you need in order to become a heavy goods vehicle mechanic, the main one is experience, don’t worry if you don’t have experience though as many courses are available.
If you fall into the 16-24 age bracket then you can apply for apprenticeships and gain experience this way. In terms of skills that are needed, the fact that the mechanic industry is moving towards a digital age, background skills in I.T would be favourable, a valid driving license is essential and last but not least you must be in a good physical condition
As a HGV mechanic / technician you will be working in a garage or a yard. The role will be unhygienic as you will be working with oil and different engine liquids, you will be required to get your hands dirty when solving problems and fixing different parts. You will be standing for long periods of time and this is why you need to be physically fit.
The average heavy goods vehicle mechanics wage is between £25,000 and £32,000 depending on age and location of the company. This is significantly affected depending on your experience. The more experienced you are the more money you can earn.
